"You can use English," their captor said. "I can understand it, and that way these two Earthlings will be able to understand what is going on." In spite of the desperate situation, Stacy found it hard to surpress a smile at being called an Earthling. Their captor continued, still speaking to the first alien: "To answer your question, we don't care what you think your rights are according to interplanetary law. We in Ragania have never signed the relevant treaties, as you should know. We wanted a couple of Earthlings, and it was easier to take the ones that you had already been dealing with rather than take the slight risk of abducting a couple of new ones.

  1. "We are going to give them a brain-scan, to acquire all of their knowledge about their planet and its people."
  2. "We are going to take them back to Ragania with us."
  3. "They will act as go-betweens for us, and tell their United Nations why their world must become part of our empire."
