"You can have the knife that I use for cutting through the masking tape sealing the cardboard boxes that our stock comes in."

Astra had hoped for something much more substantial, but she accepted the proferred knife. It had a blade about three inches long and was reasonably sharp. Brenda took Astra to the back of the shop and down a flight of steps. There was a closed door facing them.

"I'll have to shut the door after you," she said. "I don't want any rats escaping into the store. Knock on the door when you're ready to come out."

She opened the door, at the same time switching on the light. Astra entered, then heard the door shut behind her and then the bolt being shot home. Was that really necessary?

The basement was large and dank, with a concrete floor. It was lit by a dim neon tube in the centre of the ceiling, which left dark shadows in the corner of the room.

1. She could see dozens of rats! She was going to have her work cut out catching and despatching them all.
2. She could only see four rats. But they were all fully half as large as she was!
3. She couldn't see any rats. Were they hiding from her? Or had she walked into some sort of trap.
