Aqualarians generally dined fairly early, and the royal family were no
different in that respect. So at this time of year it would be another
half an hour or so before the sun set. Several other members of the court
were taking advantage of the pleasant late sunshine to stroll across the
lawns, between the flower beds and amongst the trees. The Queen therefore
took her husband and Checkers in a direction that would ensure that their
conversation could not be overheard.
"How do you keep the grass so short?" Checkers asked. "A scythe couldn't do that." "We have something that we call a mowing machine," the Prince Consort replied. "It is drawn by a horse. It's a little like a plough, except that the blades are at a height to cut the grass rather than burrow into the soil. Of course to be effective they have to be far sharper than the blades of a plough. Probably more time is taken in keeping them sharp than by the actual mowing." Checkers recalled that the Queen had said that her husband was interested in botany and agriculture. No doubt that explained his knowledge of the details of mowing. The Queen was perhaps afraid that, once he started talking about one of his favourite topics, Prince Gregor would be hard to stop. And she had other things that she wanted to discuss with Checkers.
