“What’s wrong?” said a voice from behind her. She quickly slammed the locker door shut and wiped the noxious liquid from her mouth with her apron. “Uh…I forgot to check the expiration date on this fruit smoothie I found in the fridge…” She turned to see Don standing there with a big grin on his face. He chuckled. “Yeah, I think that fridge is long overdo for a spring cleaning. Last week I found a ham sandwich in there that looked like it dated back to the Cambrian. Maybe I should have taken it to the Natural History Museum. Hell, I might’ve won a Nobel prize!”Stacy couldn’t help but smile. Don removed his apron and went over to his own locker. “Well,” he said, “I’m out of here. Worst of the dinner rush is over, you guys should be okay from here on out. You coming to Pat’s party tonight?”“Um…” Stacy faltered. “Sure…I guess….” “Good. Everybody has been talking about how reclusive and anti- social you’ve become lately. It’s like you’re a different person. I know I’ve asked this a hundred times over the last two weeks, but is everything okay?”“I honestly don’t know,” she admitted, and felt immediately better for it. She suddenly felt that she had known this person for years, and that they were someone she could confide in. “I just don’t know.” “Is it drugs, Stacy? I’m sorry for prying, but the way you’ve been acting…”“No, no,” she assured him. “I’ve never even smoked a joint, Don, you know that.” The words felt strange as they left her mouth, but she knew them to be true. “Is it a money issue? If you need to borrow some money, Stacy, just ask.”
