Perhaps Father Tyburn had called upon whatever diety or dieties he
worshipped and they had answered his call. Whatever was the cause of the
brilliant light, even though it lasted for only a few seconds it was
highly effective. For the imps, and even the mighty Haerjoord, cried out
as though they were in agony. Many lost all control of their limbs and
fell, and the rest turned and fled.
But neither Fred nor Astra saw any of this. The light had been too sudden for them to close their eyes in time, and it had been quite literally blinding. "I can't see!" Astra said. "Nor can I," Fred responded. They heard the screams of the imps, but they did not realise that the creatures - or at any rate those still able to move - were in full retreat. After all, there had been an almost constant shrieking from the demons, and the screams that they could hear now were not that different. They naturally feared that they would be set upon at any moment, almost powerless to defend themselves. But then the noise of the screams and the thunder made by hundreds of cloven hooves as the demons ran began to diminish. Soon it was, if not exactly quiet (for some of the fallen imps were still crying out), a good deal quieter. "I think whatever that light was, it must have frightened them off," Fred said. "Yes, so we're not dead, just blind. I wonder if the monks knew we were out here, but thought us expendable." "To be fair to them, they probably didn't have any choice if they weren't to be massacred. It looks as though coming to help them wasn't such a great idea. They didn't need our help, and we were blinded. Perhaps it's only temporary." "Let's hope so."
