Elaine's Folly

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 84960

Fools! thought Elaine, gleefully. Of course she had known they’d pick Sigin - in fact, she had counted on it! Her so-called gesture of goodwill had just been a ploy to gain their trust. Sigin was the only one in the entire group that might actually be able to offer her some real assistance! That is,if she could coerce him into being a good sport about it. That raven-haired loudmouth Adele was out of the question, of course. No doubt she’d resist to the bitter end…

“Very well,” she said at length, smiling that tenuous, icy smile of hers. “I will restore Sigin to his rightful form. Bring him here.”

Exotica stepped forward and reluctantly presented the cat before Elaine. “You’re… you’re not going to hurt him, are you?” she posed meekly.

“Stand aside, your naked excellency,” the indolent sorceress yawned . “Nobody asked for your mind-numbingly dull council in this matter.”

Exotica, still uneasy, turned to Fred for guidance. The knight nodded vigorously and gave her a reassuring wink. “Very well,” she finally conceded.

Elaine focused her energies on the cat and with a strange, sweeping gesture cast a powerful reversal spell on Sigin. The others watched in breathless anticipation as the spell began to take effect. There was a blinding flash of purple light and an instant later Sigin was transformed back into a...tiger.

Fred blinked in surprise as several tense moments of silence followed. “That’s not his rightful form!” he suddenly spoke.

Elaine, however, looked just as confused as he was. “I…I…there must be some sort of local interference…”

Sigin growled and circled the chamber uneasily, obviously in a state of shock.

“Cat got your tongue, Elaine?” Adele taunted, her arms still held firmly around her unconscious lover.

Elaine turned to Adele, eyes brimming with fire and brimstone. “How long have you been saving that gem, Adele?”

The other girl merely smiled and replied, “It just came to me.”

That struck a chord. “I thought we went over this before. That mouth of yours is going to get you in trouble one of these days. You know what I think? I think you might need another reminder.”

Adele raised an eyebrow. “Oh really? Well, I’ll tell you what I think. I think you don’t have the spine or the willpower to really harm me, do you father?”

Elaine began advancing on her friend-cum-nemesis, mouth frothing in insane rage. “What did you say!?”

“You heard me,” the daughter of the necromancer laughed. “I think I know what that ring has done to you now. And though in some ways it sickens me to say it, the cold fact remains. My father, in his infinite guile, couldnt just die like everyone else. His quest has always been immortality at any cost, it seems. I should have known better. Whatever truce he made with Minestus was very complicated and will probably never be fully understood. Dont you see? Elaine, my love, It’s only a matter of time before my father has complete control of your mind, rendering you dead in all but body! In short, you shall cease to be!”

Matthias sat up suddenly and looked around in apparent confusion. “Did I miss something?” he meant to say, but of course could not.

“Oh no,” Elaine said, as if to read her ex-lover’s mind. “You haven’t missed anything, YET!” A swirling ball of strange, multi-colored fire suddenly burst from the sorceress’s maws. The heat from the powerful projectile singed the hair on all those heads within that crowded chamber, and even Sigin’s long whiskers. Adele, however, faced down the assault unflinchingly. Sure enough, just as the fire looked as if it would surely consume the forlorn couple, it veered away as if repulsed by some invisible forcefield and was sent tumbling down another passageway. Moments later this was followed by a low rumble. Accordingly, a few loose pebbles and bits of debris fell from the low, arched ceiling, showering the unlikely gathering of personalities in that dark chamber...and then there was silence.

  1. Sigin, having regained some mental clarity, jumps into the middle of the dueling damsils and attempts to calm them.
  2. “Ahem! Um. Yes. Not to be a bugger here, but since technically you only fulfilled 50% of the bargain, how about going the extra mile and giving the good princess some robes?" Fred interjects. Though a seemingly fair proposal, his timing couldn't be worse.
