"Checkers recited something from the book. Evidently her eyes could see
what was written in it. I woke up halfway through. What she read sounded
like gibberish to me, but apparently it was a poem written in some
language I'd never heard of called - what was it? - something like Old
Dollmite. We weren't in the right place to see the spell take effect, but
a few minutes after Checkers had finished reading we heard a great roar.
From what Astra said afterwards, the magic apparently switched her
abilities with those of Belboz, and the roar that we heard was her roar
of triumph on killing him."
"How far away were they when the spell took effect?" "I'd estimate about fifty metres. At least, that was roughly how far away Astra was when she killed Belboz." [I have translated into modern units for the convenience of the reader.] "Presumably there was no direct line of sight between their position and yours?" "That is correct." "When Checkers finished the spell, was there any visual or audible indication that magic had been put into effect?" "Not that I noticed." Fred took some comfort that his captors were evidently not as omniscient as they liked to pretend. Evidently their need for knowledge outweighed their desire to appear superior.
