Fred paused to think about what he had been told about Astra and what he
might be able to infer from it. If the princess had been completely
frozen into place, did that mean that she had remained in her room and
that his assumption that she too had finished up in the hands of the
mysterious Outliers was wrong? Was she still frozen? What had his
informant meant when he had said earlier: "And in her condition, it is
quite undesirable that anything be known about her at this time." At
least she was alive - if the Outlier could be trusted to be telling the
truth, that is.
Since the Outlier evidently wasn't going to tell him any more about what had happened to the princess, he attempted to put her out of his mind for the time being. Thinking about what else the man - or was he a man? - had said, he recalled his remark that "Our world has gotten more hazardous within the last day as a result of what has taken place here." Did these people intend that what they had done should reduce that hazard? What had they done that might do that? Well, they had taken the book. Suddenly light dawned. Without thinking, he said: "The red magic - that is the hazard isn't it?"
