"But perhaps Rutland could provide that proof, if he could be persuaded that we could protect him," Astra suggested, pursuing her policy of trying to re-establish her authority by being more proactive. She had no idea what "Is the Pope Catholic?" had meant, but had decided it would be better to let that pass, since the rest of Frank's exchange with her sister had been perfectly clear. (Though she didn't understand what his earlier remark about a "bridge call" had meant.)

"You may be right," Frank said. "Rutland getting in contact with us could be the break that we've been looking for."

"Let me talk to him and see what he wants," Astra said.

1. "All right," Frank said. "It's a risk worth taking, I think. He's probably assuming that you are effectively out of commission, and so speaking to you might put him sufficiently off balance to let something slip."
2. "I don't think that would be a very good idea, Governor," Frank said.
3. "I don't think that would be wise," the doctor said.
