In reply she received a volley of barks. They had worked out a code in which one bark meant yes and two barks meant no, but Astra's question required a more far complex answer than that, one which Velus - for all his enthusiasm - had no hope of conveying.

Astra was not too bothered. How Velus had come by the rod was of little importance. What mattered was that he had brought it to her, and that she was easily a noble enough royal to get the rod to do her bidding.

"Put the rod down," she told Velus. "I'm going to attempt to fashion it into a knife, then use it to cut my bonds."
