Nocturnal Noises

As far as he was aware, no-one but the villagers knew that he and Astra were staying in the inn. Why should any of them want to enter her room? Theft seemed an unlikely motive. Anyone who had seen them yesterday evening would have noted that he had paid for everything. The only possesions Astra had were the gown that he had bought her and the book. She didn't even have a pair of shoes, since none could be found last night that would fit her.

He went to the door of his room and opened it, preparing to come to her aid.

1. Then he heard a scream from within her room, a man's scream. Astra had evidently dealt effectively with the intruder.
2. Then he heard a scream from within her room, It was a woman's scream. He feared the worst.
3. Then he saw that the noise had not been caused by an intruder entering Astra's room after all, but by Astra herself leaving it. She was now on the landing. What on Earth could she be doing at this early hour?
4. At least that was his intention. But someone had locked his door from the outside!
