Dawn was just breaking, so Fred had had only four hours rest, but a
knight could not afford to sleep too soundly, and although the noise was
slight it had been enough to wake him.
As far as he was aware, no-one but the villagers knew that he and Astra were staying in the inn. Why should any of them want to enter her room? Theft seemed an unlikely motive. Anyone who had seen them yesterday evening would have noted that he had paid for everything. The only possesions Astra had were the gown that he had bought her and the book. She didn't even have a pair of shoes, since none could be found last night that would fit her. He went to the door of his room and opened it, preparing to come to her aid.
