The moment that Astra had first seen her sister, she had thought that she
looked remarkably mature. Perhaps it was a result of the uniform that she
was wearing? That seemed to be confirmed when she found that, as there
should be, there were ten years between them. But then Belinda had
indicated that she - Astra - was 35, or possibly even more. That had come
as a great shock, for as far as she was concerned she was only 28. She
had lost at least seven years out of her life. So she had hurriedly
changed the subject, hoping that the doctor had not noticed her momentary
shocked expression. She would rather not give him any further grounds for
doubting her sanity, which she was sure that he already did to some
degree.
So she turned the topic of conversation to Belinda's uniform. When she asked about one of the pins on the collar, her sister replied: "That is the insignia for the branch of the army I am in: the tank and crossed swords of the armored cavalry." Astra had no idea what a tank might be in this context.
