Fred and Astra found a dry spot by the side of the trail where they could
sit in reasonable comfort. The self-illuminating property of the book
meant that, even though it was after dark, there ought to be no
difficulty in reading it. Astra had used a small piece of card, which
Belboz had evidently been using as a bookmark, to mark the page in which
she was interested, and so had no difficulty in opening the book to the
desired page. "This is what I wanted you to see," she said. "I imagine
that Belboz must have written it, though I can't be sure."
The text in the book used a colour that was visible to glider eyes, but was not in the human visual range. [83837] (Belboz had evidently been able to see it, but he had magical resources that Fred and Astra did not.) Astra had been puzzled to find that the book which - judging by its size, its high quality of paper and binding and its glow - must be of considerable importance seemed to consist mostly of blank pages. But then she had found a handwritten note, squeezed into the bottom inch of the page as if to avoid writing over some invisible text:
