A Prisoner - But of Whom (or of What)?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 83025

For a moment Astra wondered if Fred freeing her, their subsequent death and reincarnation, and the bizarre burlesque act interlude might all have been just an amazingly vivid dream. But the words of the unseen questioner fitted too well with the fact that she and Fred had been looking for a dragon, even if they had so far made no progress at all in that direction. Unfortunately the bright light in her eyes made it almost impossible to see anything, even though her eyes were almost shut, so she had no idea where she was. She could feel that her naked back and buttocks were in contact with some cold, smooth surface, but whether it was rock or some artificial material was impossible to tell.

"Who are you?" she asked. "How did you know that I was looking for a dragon? And how did you know that I'm a princess?"

"You surely don't expect me to reveal all my secrets." The voice sounded amused.

"The only way that you could have learnt those things is from Fred. Is he a prisoner here too? Is he all right? How did you bring me here? Why did you bring me here? Where is 'here'?"

"So many questions."

"But you aren't going to answer any of them, are you?"

  1. "No."
  2. "I might. Some of them, at least."
  3. "I will answer one of your questions for each one of mine that you answer. Does that sound fair?"
  4. There was no answer. Instead the light went out, leaving Astra in what might have been total darkness. (She couldn't tell until her eyes had adjusted.) Then she heard receding footsteps. "Wait! Come back!" she called.
