Fred Confronts the Dragon--Or Does He?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 81847

"Well well well," said a cold, soft voice from the tunnel's entrance. Fred sharply turned his head and saw something walking down the tunnel that appeared to be human. Its body was slim and sinuous, and it moved with a catlike grace. But Fred knew that this creature was not what it appeared. Its features were too perfect, its body too large. And of course there was the aura of crackling flame that surrounded it. "It looks like I've picked up a few more heroes. Good I was getting a little bored."

"Fred, be careful!" whispered Glenda. "I've seen what it's capable of!"

Fred's heart was throbbing and he was drenched in sweat. He knew that this could only be that very dragon he had been sent to slay, who had imprisoned this noble and brave woman with evil magic. "Behold your death!" he screamed, drawing his enchanted black blade.

"Ah, a dragonslayer!" said the dragon, giggling. "This is just getting better and better." The flame around him began to grow brighter and hotter.

Fred was about to mkae his first strike when the flame turned black and the dragon fell to the ground, screaming and writhing on the floor. An old, wiry man in robes entered the room. He was much shorter and smaller, but Fred could see a definite resemblance.

The old man slapped his face and groaned. "What have you been doing this time, you little idiot? I told you not to attract attention and not to damage the girl! We need her intact!"

"But father!" whined the younger dragon. "That stupid King kept sending those knights after me! I just wanted to have some fun!"

"Well, you've had enough fun. Let the girl go. It's just about time. The other two could probably be of help to us as well." With that, the elder dragon turned to the three adventurers, who were staring dumbfounded. He snapped his fingers and Astra's chains dissolved. "I'm sorry, my son gets a little carried away at times. I am Arkon-Vaal, the true dragon of these caves. I mean you no harm whatsoever. Would you like some tea?"

"No I would not like some tea!" roared Fred, brandishing his sword. "You burn our fields, kidnap our peasants, kill our knights, imprison and torture innocent women, and then you expect us to just sit there and have tea! I shall not!" Fred tried to strike at the dragon with his sword but found he couldn't move a muscle.

"I understand why you're angry, you're stuck here anyway, so you might as well listen," said the Arkon-Vaal. "The kidnappings were unfortunate, but necessary. I'll explain when the time comes. As for the random killings and attacks on your fields...

  1. "I'm afraid that was my son's work. As I said, he gets a little carried away."
  2. "That was none of my work. In fact, I gathered Astra and the others to stop the force that's really behind them."
  3. "I have no idea what any of that is all about. I haven't been keeping up with current affairs. That would be my son's job, if he wasn't making such an idiot of himself."
  4. "That was all her doing." He was pointing at Glenda.
