Fred Loses His "Best Friend" Status

"Husband?" Fred queried, seemingly unaware that he was jeopardising his own "best friend" status. "Velus is not your husband."

"But Alfred conducted our marriage service," Astra protested.

"I'm afraid that the story that Alfred told you, that butlers in Allaria are licensed to conduct wedding ceremonies, isn't actually true. I suspect that Velus put him up to it, so that you could console yourself with the thought that your baby or babies wouldn't be born out of wedlock."

"You bastards!" Astra said, though whether she meant Fred and Velus, Fred and Alfred, Alfred and Velus, or all three, wasn't absolutely clear.

"You have it all wrong," Fred said, rubbing salt into the wound. "It's your unborn babies who will be bastards, not us."
