Fred recognised Princess Astra at once. Her beauty, height, athleticism
and red hair made her a striking figure. He had met her a year ago when
he was part of a diplomatic mission to Aqualaria. About six months after
that, news had reached Allaria that she had mysteriously disappeared. She
had been taking a bath. When the maidservant came in to ask if she would
like any more hot water, the bath had been empty. None of the princess's
clothes had been missing, and the towel was bone dry so evidently had not
been used.
Now the explanation was apparent. She must have been magically teleported away by the dragon while she was bathing, and then been encased in the crystal. She was even still holding a bar of soap. "Thanks for saving my life," she said to Fred. [9391-1] "I know you, don't I?" Evidently their previous meeting had made less impact on her than it had on Fred. "Yes, we met about about a year ago, Princess. I'm Frederigo D'Honaire, but my friends call me Fred." "Nice to meet you again, Frederigo." Evidently Astra did not yet consider him a friend, for all that he had rescued her from the crystal. She added: "And your companion is?" "I am Adele, sorceress and daughter of Belboz the Fell. I actually played a greater part in rescuing you than Fred did." "Then thank you, Adele. How long was I trapped in the crystal? Hours? Days? I had no way of telling." "About six months," Fred told her. "Goodness! I had no idea that it was so long. By now everyone must assume that I'm dead. I must return home at once." "That may not be so simple," Adele said. "Thanks to Fred's over-direct approach to freeing you, the dragon will be aware of your escape. He won't want to lose a valuable part of his collection."
