A New Arrival

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 8066

This someone was a small, lithe man carrying a dagger, wearing black robes that seemed to cover every inch of his body. His face was covered by a hood, and Fred and Jon could not see it from above.

Jon seemed fearless at this development. Fred wished he could be like his brother. His own heart was pounding so loudly that he was sure the man below could hear it. He had always loved tales of adventure and daring and dreamed of becoming a Knight of the Kingdom or even joining the Unafilliated Adventurer's Guild, maybe even slaying a dragon. No dragon had walked the land for many centuries, but Fred knew that there had to be others lurking beneath the earth.

His father, though, had always been dismayed by this. He had never told Fred any of these tales, and had always berated Master Crom for doing so. He impressed on Fred that, since his brother would be joining the White Hand, it was Fred who was destined to rule the Duchy of Suffex. As for the Adventurer's Guild, they were nothing more than a band of glorified thieves. Fred's duty was to stay here and take care of his people. Fred had always resented this. What did his father know? Now that he was up close to danger, however, he wished he was back in his bedroom asleep. Still, it was very exciting, and Fred felt that some part of him was emerging that he had only dreamed of.

The man waited impatiently for a few minutes that seemed like hours. Then, however, someone else entered. It was another person wearing black robes. This one was carrying a spear exactly like that which was sticking out of Migillicutty's leg. "Did you succeed?" she hissed--for her voice was clearly that of a woman. It was a cold, hard voice that sent chills down Fred's spine.

"Indeed I did. Who could have imagined that, of all those in this castle, Duke Charles would entrust the combination to his cook? This one did have rather more strength of will and body that I had at first believed. Still, I was able to overcome him, and to gain the information by draining some of his blood."

"You were not observed?"

"No one notice me save the cook. And I have placed a spell on him so that he will not remember our encounter." With that, he removed the spear and chanted a few horrible words. The clotted blood began to disappear, and the wound in the leg healed. "The artifact is ours now. We shall leave," said the woman.

  1. And with that, the two left the room.
  2. Suddenly, the man looked up at the grate and fixed his cold gaze on Fred and Jon.
