Fred had originally been under the impression that the building which
they were in was the nobleman's home. But from the reference to a box
office, it seemed that it was actually a theatre or similar public
building that the lord had hired for his entourage's entertainment. That
was good, as it might mean that escape would be rather easier than if
they were in a castle.
As best he could in the darkness of the cupboard, he used the pieces of cloth, the knife and the rope to make himself a loincloth and a bandage for his grazed leg. His preparations complete, he attempted to push open the door, only to find that it would not budge! When he had pulled the door closed after him, it must have locked itself. He recalled that the key was in the lock, but that did not help him here on the inside. The door was not that sturdy, and no doubt he could kick it open, but that would involve making a lot of noise. Then he heard footsteps approaching, two men by the sound of it. That was confirmed when one man said to the other: "Did Mr Price say what he wanted the oil and those other things for?" "No, but I assume that they're props needed for the burlesque artist's act. You know, she's very good. You'd never guess that she and Mr Price must have arranged everything in advance." "Well she certainly fooled me. I really thought that she was reluctant to play 'Ralph says', but no doubt you know best..."
