The Never Ending Quest - Episode 80448

Fred and Astra spotted the puddle just in time, and stopped. It covered the floor from wall to wall and was too big for them to step over it. It was almost perfectly camouflaged, not through being transparent and thus allowing the floor to be seen through it, but because the opaque liquid was an almost identical shade of pale grey to the floor.

"Could it be some sort of trap?" Astra asked.

"I don't see how, unless it's a powerful acid of some kind."

"Let's find out." Astra dipped the point of her improvised bo staff into the puddle and then withdrew it.

She examined it carefully. "There's no sign of any damage to the wood," she reported. "Whatever the stuff is, it's not an acid."

"I'm still uneasy about it. What is it for?"

"If we take a good run-up, we should be able to leap over it. It looks to be no more than eight feet wide."

So they walked some way back down the passage, and then - side by side - ran forward and leapt. But the puddle extended further than they had thought, and they both landed in it with a splash.

  1. The puddle was only a couple of inches deep and seemed harmless.
  2. The puddle wasn't very deep, but the liquid proved to be far from harmless,
  3. The opacity of the liquid had meant that they couldn't judge its depth. The floor had been excavated to a considerable depth under the liquid, and to their astonishment they went in over their heads.
