The Rules of Combat

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 79559

Astra then pleaded to the lord, "My Lord, would it be possible for your excellency to intervene, so that I may degrade Fred to his proper place?"

"Certainly, miss, if you can do it. But we are going to do things my way. Bruno, Charlie, get your rear ends out of your chairs and give them to the woman. But let us raise the stakes - put some skin in the game. The winner gets a presentable set of clothes, and a seat down here to watch the rest of the show. The loser can remove that costume, and plays a game of 'Ralph says' for a half hour. And Ralph has an imagination."

The crowd roared. Astra appreciated that they were happy, but also noted that there were no women in the crowd. She did not have to read minds to figure out what the crowd probably wanted. She was wondering whether it would be better for her to go all out and beat Fred, or lose gracefully and try to get out with as much dignity as possible.

Fred, in the meantime, was thinking about the original challenge. "To kill a dragon." But in this odd city, what threat did the dragon pose? Was the dragon the animal that he despised, or could it be something else? Perhaps it was a man's name? Or an object of some sort? He needed to buy time so that he could talk to Astra.

Fred then said, "My Lord, if the terms of combat are acceptable to you, I would ask - will one match decide it all? Or shall we do two out of three?"

The man replied

  1. "Single match."
  2. "Two of three."
  3. "Neither. The match shall be fought under these terms ...."
