"Who would have been the nearest person to this man when he lost his
memory?" the man wanted
to know. "The range of their device only seems to be a few feet, maybe
five feet at the
outside." "Well, I suppose the interviewer would have been the only one to
be that
close. But that's ridiculous! I don't believe for a minute that he could
have been
responsible." "Look," said the man urgently. "You've got to believe me!
They obviously thought
you were on to them, which is why you were a victim. They knew that you
were working
on the story, and so had been keeping an eye on you. We were keeping an
eye on you too,
of course, waiting for the right moment to ask for your help."
He went on: "We know you had kept some notes of what you had found out. We need those notes desperately. They will try to destroy them, of course, but I think you caught them off-guard by finding your way back to K-NEWS so quickly. But if that interviewer - or someone else at K-NEWS - is working for them, then we've very little time. In fact, it may already be too late."
