After a while, they turned off onto a dirt side road, which eventually
ended at a
conveniently empty parking area. "Fortunately nobody else ever seems to
come here," Robert said,
as they took the camping gear out of their vehicle. A short walk brought
them to a meadow
that both Stacy and Paula recognised from one of the photos. [6784] They
did not need
Robert to say: "Right, this is the place." He went on: "Their touchdown
point has
always been right in the centre of the meadow, presumably to minimise the
risk of
colliding with a tree on the way down. You can see where the grass is
still flattened.
So I suggest we make camp just here, where we should be quite safe if they
make a
landing."
So they made camp, had a meal, and then impatiently waited the couple of hours till dusk. As the daylight ebbed away, Paula pointed at a bright light just above the horizon. "Look, over there!" she said excitedly. Robert just chuckled. "You're a townie, aren't you? Where there's too much glare for the night sky to be very visible. That's the planet Venus." "Oh!" said Paula ruefully.
