How could this Toby Masterson have written a novel that seemed to be
describing her own
experiences with such remarkable accuracy? Stacy had the uncomfortable
thought that what she decided to do next
might be predestined, determined by whatever Masterson had written in the
part of the
book that she could not yet read. She decided that she needed to visit
Masterson and
ask him a few questions.
How to find him, though? The book jacket told her that he lived in New York, but that wasn't much to go on. Perhaps his publishers, Tripleday, would be willing to give her his address or phone number. So she set out for their offices on Madison Avenue. She found them easily enough. Their premises were within a large office block. Entering the lobby, she spoke to the receptionist, who directed her up to the third floor. There, she was directed to an executive's office. She asked him whether he would be willing to help her get in touch with Toby Masterson. He replied:
