Taking the author's advice literally, they do, indeed, decide to try the buffet. And the caterers went all out on this one--there's lobster, salmon, chilled shrimp and oysters on the halfshell, a wide variety of hot and cold entrees, at least a half-dozen varieties of salad, both hot and cold vegetable and potato soup, platters of exquisitely meats, breads, cold cuts, wafer-cut sandwiches and canapes, dressings of chicken, duck and turkey, molded aspic and beluga caviar, and more relishes and condiments than any of them can remember seeing in one place beefore. There are urns of coffee, chocolate, various fruit punches and cold iced tea. A separate board holds the desserts, cakes and ices, all of them almost too heartbreakingly beautiful to eat.
