Fred was just in time to block the princess's initial thrust, He quickly
realised that she was a good fencer, in fact very good indeed. It did not
help that he was handicapped by his Allarian knight's idea of honour,
which meant that he tried to fight defensively, since deliberately
injuring a woman was unthinkable. He desperately tried to concentrate,
and not to be distracted by the fact that his opponent was not only naked
but very beautiful.
After five minutes of extremely skilful swordplay by both combatants, neither Fred nor Astra had suffered so much as a nick. Fred was not sure how much longer he could continue, though. It was terribly hot in the cave - after all it had a man made of molten lava in it. Sweat was running down into his eyes, interfering with his vision, and he felt that before long he might suffer from heatstroke. Astra too was covered in a sheen of perspiration, but she had the advantage over him in that she did not have armour to make her even hotter. But then Lava Man shouted: "Stop!" The princess took a pace backwards and lowered her sword-arm. The look of hatred in her eyes died away, leaving her with a totally blank expression that Fred found possibly even more unsettling. She stood motionless, apart from the effect of the heavy breathing caused by her recent exertion. "You're the first opponent that she hasn't killed in short order," Lava Man told Fred. "You're very good with a blade. I didn't want to risk that you might kill her instead of her killing you. And if you lost, your death would have been a waste. I can use a man who handles a sword as well as you do... Would you like to see her dance?" Fred was momentarily thrown by the sudden change of topic. After a moment, he said:
