The Never Ending Quest - Episode 7726

Faces looked at Jellico with undisguised shock. Some even go so far as to run tricorders in his general direction, sure that this man before them is somehow....not as he appears. The Admiral smiles a wintry smile as they finally conclude that he IS the real article (the blood test was a nice touch) and so he gets down to business. Not only does it prove that Jellico is Jellico and not a Changling spy (that somehow hasen't come forward yet to claim the position that has been thrust upon Odo, chief of security something of an outsider of his actual species).

"You know that I have the authority to do this....since I'm all that is officially left of the High Command of Star Fleet," Jellico sighs. "and with the death of the President.....and pretty much all of the civilian government of the United Federation of Planets gone, we have....a small problem. So, by regulations, I have broad powers. So I'm promoting you all present to the rank of Admiral....so I'm not stupid enough to believe that I can run what is left of the Fleet single handed!"

Piccard nods slightly. He and the admiral have had....differences in the past and the Captain (now admiral) of the Enterprise E is a touch surprised at all that has happened, but he is relieved to see that Jellico has enough brains to truest one such as he who's had so much....field experience behind the command seat of a starship.

Riker looks a bit lost, but is hiding it well. Jellico had him relieved of duty for a while during a heated disagreement with how the admiral had over how he ran his business during a flare up between the Federation and the Cardassians. Jellico's hard-nosed, less than respectful treatment of him had earned Jellico a bad name from Riker (basically there was some bad blood between Riker and Jellico). He'd thought Jellico mad for pushing through an order for all Star Fleet personnel to begin carrying around phasors while on duty, for fear of changelings. For a while he'd thought that maybe....just maybe something human lurked within the shell of the man when he'd ordered all "Holo Doctors" to be given a commission and all rights associated other sentient beings...but subsequent research into reasons given for these orders left Riker with a bad taste in his mouth (actually, Jellico had done this as a favor for Janeway....to squash talk of upgrading the Doctor with the newest version.....and in the process destroying the Voyager holographic doctor.....but as per usual Jellico did it in such a way to appear all business....and very much the hard nosed SOB he was...usually). And though he'd heard rumors of what had happened to the Voyager's security system by the Military breaking into it....he had thought Jellico paranoid for instituting the heavy security protocols and such......it slowed computer speed and accessibility immensely (and VERY inconvenient). But then again.....

Sisko, who'd been able to barely escape with his crew in the Defiant, had heard mixed thing of the admiral to not be surprised overly by this sudden promotion. Basically, he'd heard that Jellico was a hammer....and problems were nails to him. That didn't make friends, but it worked. Sisko had to do some nailing in his day, but he'd also was a little more....diplomatic about the whole affair than Jellico. Still, he'd always figured that Jellico was an effective and competent officer....so never really doubted the admirals mental facilities.

The Janeways just smile grimly slightly to themselves. They had always known the admirals true nature, but had always kept it a secret.....for both they and he did not wish to be accused of the admiral showing favoritism. In the short run it would be good, but in the long run it would have been counterproductive for Janeway's carrier and effectiveness as a leader. By career raising "his" Janeway and sisters to the ranks of admirals, Jellico could stop dancing around possible charges of favoritism (now that the Janeways were peers in rank to him), and thus a smoother working relationship could begin.

Calhoun Mackenzie Calhoun has been wondering about the admiral ever since that call that had saved the Excalibur from destruction. The fact that what had been his strongest detractor had just PROMOTED him to a peer to help with organizing and running what was left of the Fleet (a bunch of halfway damaged and rag tag ships).....just was another sign of something that was part of the strange things that Jellico had experience on Terra Prime. With the rescue of his son by forces friendly with Jellico...and a few terse but helpful explanations by the admiral to the angered son of Calhoun had done wonders to Calhouns bad feeling for the admiral.

He'd just wished that the admiral would have gone sooner to Terra Prime, for whatever had happened there to him must have been miraculous!

That business settled, the newest admirals are going to go out and meet their Dominion, Romulan, and various other counterparts when a Military official approaches, looking somewhat at a loss.

  1. "Uh, I have some rather unusual news," the Military officer begins. See, there is this one lady out here who calls herself Morganna Wordeni and her husband, Rugen. You aren't going to believe this....they're...elves."
