The staircase was too steep for Velus, who wasn't very big. He was hoping
that Astra would carry him, but she still had Fred's sword so that the
task fell to the knight.
After they had been climbing for five minutes, the staircase took a sharp turn to the right. As they turned the corner, they saw that just ahead of them was a patch of blue sky. They had reached an exit (not the one by which Fred had entered). "So it's day time," Astra observed, as they emerged onto a steep hillside. In front of them was a wide, green valley, and beyond it - about five miles away - was the mountain that was their destination "Yes. Something has just occurred to me. I should have thought of it earlier, but I've become so accustomed to your nudity that I forgot. Being naked in the caves is one thing, but are you prepared to go outside like that?" "I don't see that I have much choice. Anyway, we're very unlikely to meet anyone. Since the dragon took up residence in this region, everyone who used to live here will have moved away."
