"Why not?" asked Stacy. "Well, they think that it's too late for that now.
The first known
case was three weeks ago, and since then there have been several hundred.
In a city
like New York, that must mean that many thousands of people will have been
exposed
to the infection, if that's what it is. Tracing them all, let alone
quarantining them
all, would be an impossible task. At the moment, they seem to be hoping
that most
people will have a natural immunity to whatever it is. And if they can
track it down
to a particular virus, then they may be able to launch an immunisation
programme.
Of course, research into it is going to be difficult if all the experts go
down with
amnesia themselves."
That sounded very worrying, Stacy thought. What proportion of people would have to go down with amnesia before normal city life effectively collapsed? Ten per cent? Twenty per cent? It was impossible to tell, she decided.
