Things Become Complicated

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 7672

After about half an hour, the nearest dishes of the VLA came into view above the horizon, and Stacy caught her breath. They looked magnificent. Shortly afterwards, Betty parked in the visitors' center car park. There was less than an hour to go before dark, and Stacy decided that she would rather walk up to the nearest dish than go into the center. When dusk fell, Betty would show her round the control room.

Before they could walk away from the parking lot, a noise began which sounded rather like a very poorly maintained washing machine at the end of its spin cycle. Then a blue box, some nine feet high and four feet wide, materialised out of thin air. It had a flashing blue light on top, and the word "Police" painted on it. Stacy was totally confounded. How could something just appear out of thin air? Betty seemed not at all disconcerted, though. Instead she seemed happy and excited. "It's the TARDIS," she said. "The what?" asked Stacy, less well informed than Betty on classic SF series on TV. "The TARDIS," repeated Betty, "Or more correctly, a TARDIS - Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. In other words, a time machine. And this one is piloted by none other than the Doctor himself." Stacy looked at her as if she was insane, but Betty didn't care. She was too elated at the thought of meeting the Doctor. The door in the front of the TARDIS opened, and out stepped a man dressed in rather a dandified fashion, with a shock of white hair. "It's the third Doctor," breathed Betty.

"Hello," said the man to the two women. "I'm known as the Doctor." "I'm Betty and this is Stacy," Betty replied. "Betty, eh? That's a coincidence," the Doctor said. At that moment two very attractive redheaded women appeared in the doorway behind him. One of them was dressed practically, in a pair of tan pants, heavy boots and a puffy- sleeved shirt. The other looked like a fashion victim, in a mini-skirt, a blouse with some kind of weird ruffles, and a pair of high heels. The Doctor said: "May I introduce..." "Betty and Melissa, the Twins of Doom," Betty finished the sentence for him. The Doctor looked surprised, and the Betty "twin" looked positively astounded.

[Author's note: It may help in understanding this episode to go to www.addventure.com, and read episode 96363 of Game 3, wherein Betty - who has been drawn into Addventure, turned into a duplicate of the stunning redhead Melissa and sent back to medieval times - meets the Doctor. How the "twins" are dressed is based on the description in 98792.]

Stacy's Betty protested to the redheads: "But you're fictional characters. I was partly responsible for creating you." (As far as she was concerned, the Doctor wasn't fictional, it appeared.) The Doctor said: "We can sort all that out later. We've only got an hour to:

  1. "Shut down the VLA and prevent a massive explosion."
  2. "Track down the Master."
  3. "Find a man called Dan who works in a shop somewhere in this locality."
  4. find--hey, wait a minute, who's that person who just appeared out of nowhere?

JH (who thought that the plot was getting rather Dr Who-like, so why not introduce the Doctor)
