"Well done, Velus!" said Fred. "Please be quick as you can with the ropes. The demons will no doubt be back before long. Who'd have thought they'd be so cowardly, though." Soon Fred and Astra were free. Fortunately they had not been tied up for long enough for their limbs to stiffen up.

Since escaping through the door risked running straight into alien reinforcements, they decided to leave by the vent through which Velus had entered. Fred stood on the chair and lifted Velus into the tunnel. Then Astra climbed onto his shoulders and eased herself through the vent. Finally Fred balanced a second chair on top of the first, so he could get high enough to lift himself through.

They had not gone very far through the tunnel (really more of an air-conditioning duct) when:

  1. Fred, bringing up the rear, got stuck. It was after all a very narrow tunnel. [4471]
  2. There was a hissing sound. The aliens were pumping some sort of gas through the ducting.
  3. There was a ripping sound. Astra had caught her dress on something.
  4. Another tunnel branched off from the one they were in. Velus wondered if he should lead them down it.
