"Yes, Master, I'm afraid that I have," Jolyon confessed, hanging his
head. "It was just a bit of fun. But I didn't have enough time to furnish
them with a full set of memories."
"What!" Kuykel said. His hand began moving towards the sword at his side. Walwyn was worried. This could mean big trouble, for himself as well as for Jolyon. If the mages' council learned of it, they would take the view that he was responsible for his apprentice, and he would face a severe punishment, possibly even expulsion. Jolyon's previous memory experiments had been on a servant girl, and had been easy to hush up, but these three looked as if they might be - or have been - people of quality. He regretted now that he had taken Jolyon to task in a public place. Another moment, and "Kuykel" would be on his feet with his sword drawn, and the inn's patrons would be bound to realise that something was up. He had to act fast. At least their table was far enough from the others that he would not be overheard. "Hold!" he said in the special language used for spellcasting. Kuykel, Natasha, Gilana, and even Jolyon, found themselves unable to move. "You did a very foolish thing," he told Jolyon. "The only way to avoid serious trouble - for me as well as for you - will be to go along with what you have done, but to give them the full set of memories that they currently lack. I am going to make them forget the last five minutes. Then, when we return to our premises after our meal, I will see that they are supplied with appropriate memories. But Natasha will not be your girlfriend any more; you don't deserve to gain from this stupid escapade."
