Some instinct told Astra-chan that, in spite of her success so far, she
should not push her luck, and that Violent Jay would be a much more
formidable adversary than anyone she had faced so far. So she dived into
the water and commenced swimming, using a powerful crawl stroke. Violent
Jay managed to pull up just in time to avoid going over the edge of the
jetty. He made no attempt to dive in after her; he was not built for
swimming.
Astra-chan's score, which she had been too busy to notice, had been climbing rapidly as she fought the ninja clowns, and now it increased further. However she still had a problem. She could not come to shore anywhere on the near side, or the ninja clowns would intercept her, since they - or at least the fitter ones - could run faster than she could swim. So she would have to head for the far shore. Due to the strange nature of this lake - or whatever it was - she had no idea how far that might be. It might be further than even her considerable endurance as a swimmer would take her. After a short time she heard the splash of oars from behind her, and realised that one or more of the ninjas was rowing after her in the boat in which she had arrived at the pier. [73558] Could she swim fast enough to prevent being overtaken? It seemed very doubtful.
