Minestus assumed that his potential escorts could tell that he was a
powerful mage, but that they did not know who he was or why he wanted to
enter their land. If they had, he would surely have been refused entry.
That at least was some encouragement.
He did not think that even these five magic users, though clearly powerful, could read his mind without his consent, but he was not going to take any chances and so attempted to clear his mind of anything that might make them suspicious. His hope was that, after escorting him for a day or two with nothing untoward happening, they might decide that he no longer merited escorting. Failing that, their vigilance might drop and he might be able to elude them or, even if he could not manage that, re-establish control over Fred and Astra. Taking a deep breath, he crossed the border into the Three Kingdoms. Meanwhile Fred, Astra, Velus and Wei were continuing through the outer city of Behjing and were approaching the walled inner city. The walls had been built long ago, in an age when the inhabitants still relied on fortifications to protect them rather than more subtle magical methods. However the walls had been kept in good repair as an important part of the city's heritage. Wei explained all this to Fred and Astra, as well as telling them that his master's abode was inside the wall but only just; apparently it was literally only a stone's throw within it. The road that they were on led through a great archway in the wall. There was no sign of a gate that could be closed in the event of war; presumably the residents were confident that none was needed.
