I am only a peasant boy - or was, before I became a dog - and so don't know much about magic, but it seems to me that a spell would ordinarily carry on working until it was countermanded."

"That does seem logical," Fred conceded. "Ah, I'm beginning to make an impression on the rock where your right wrist chain is attached to the wall. If you pull on the chain now, it might come free."

  1. Sure enough, soon Astra's chains had all been prised free from the wall.
  2. That chain was soon free. Unfortunately the rock where her other wrist chain was attached was much harder.
