Marks on the Wall

Fred places the light in the bottle. He stoops headfirst into the passage, and crawls in on his hands and knees. He traps the neck of the bottle under his right hand and carefully drags it as he goes along. A dim circle of light illuminates the right wall. Fred continues for twenty yards. The passage broadens. It is now tall enough for Fred to raise himself from the ground, and walk with stooped shoulders into a hollow in the cave.

The floor is damp. Fred walks slowly toward a wall. Someone has painted something on the wall! Fred examines it with his light, and finds that it is

1. writing.
2. a map.
3. a painting.
