Discretion or Valour?

The three guards who had been sent for Astra looked at one another. They were dressed in chain mail and had swords, it was true. On the other hand, even without a weapon the angry centauress looked very formidable, and the door to the dungeon that lay on the floor behind her testified to the sort of damage that her hooves could inflict.

1. The guards decided that discretion was the better part of valour and stood aside.
2. The guards evidently decided that valour was the better part of discretion, as they continued to block Astra's exit.
