Apparently the fact that Astra was now a centauress had not changed
Eliza's feelings towards her at all. Astra's feelings for Eliza were more
platonic, but she felt that it might be unwise to disillusion the girl
before her escape was complete.
So when Eliza said: "Please take me with you," she replied: "Sure. Hop up." She knelt down so that Eliza could climb on her back, then said: "Hold on tight." With that, she stood up and broke into a gallop along the passage that led from the dungeons out into the castle courtyard. Fortunately for Eliza there was plenty of headroom. Astra emerged into the courtyard about a hundred metres from the main gate. Luckily there was no time for the guards who manned it to bring down the portcullis or to raise the drawbridge. Nor did any of them feel like standing in the way of a charging centauress. The one man who had a crossbow managed to fire one bolt at her but missed. Then Astra was out of the castle, across the drawbridge and galloping down the surrounding town's main highway.
