Astra is Freed

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 74519

The inscription was in some arcane language, and Fred found himself overcome by the fear that nothing would happen, or even worse, that something bad would happen, if he made even the slightest mistake. He reminded himself of Astra's plight and so steeling himself, began to read.

Manathus knew that Fred would probably have difficulty in reading the inscription, so when he'd given Fred the device and the needlessly complicated means of how it functioned, he had also subtly given Fred the means to read the inscription word perfectly.

The first word lit up and a hardly-audible hum started. As each word of the inscription was read out, they too lit up, and the hum gradually grew louder and louder. Once the final word lit up, the hands that held Astra in their painful grip suddenly let go of her and grabbed the box.

Astra got up quickly, and moved to the furthest corner of the room away from the tile lest the hands tried to grab her again.

Concerned, and uncertain of whether he should try and comfort her or not, Fred asked, "How are you feeling?"

"I'll survive," she replied, giving Fred a shaky smile. "I never realised a booby trap could be quite so... literal."

Fred could see the strain on her face. She was still in pain, but he knew she wouldn't admit it. But there was more pressing matters to attend to: "Do you remember what was written on the tile, Astra?"

  1. She could remember it word for word.
  2. She could remember fragments, but understandably was unwilling to get closer to the tile to remind herself.
