"Well done!" Exotica replied. "Unfortunately I'm evidently less persistent than you, and quickly gave up working on mine. So there's no immediate prospect of my freeing myself that way. And though I have a little magic, it's not enough to break my chains."

Erlend coughed meaningly. "Oh, sorry," Exotica said. "You two haven't been introduced, have you?. Astra, I'd like to introduce Sir Erlend the Unlikely, one of my father's knights. Erlend, this is Princess Astra of Aqualaria."

"Your Highness," Erlend said, managing a passable bow.

"I don't think this is the time or the place for formality. Please just call me Astra."

"Thank you, Astra. Er, Exotica. Your magic might not work on the chains, but how about on the rock wall to which they are fastened? If you could make that crumble, then you'd be free."

1. "Doh! Why didn't I think of that?"
2. "No use. You have to be looking at what you are bespelling for it to work, and my back is to the wall."
3. "Unfortunately the dragon extended his spell to the rock wall as well as to the chains, so that my magic won't work on it."
