Fright and Flight

Suddenly something seemed to snap within her, and she felt that she could stand no more. She fled. It would have been understandable for most fourteen year-olds in such a situation to do that, indeed not just understandable but only to be expected. But somewhere deep inside she knew that Aqualarian princesses were supposed to be made of sterner stuff.

Considering her exhaustion, she ran remarkably quickly. Perhaps, without being consciously aware of it, she was drawing on the power of the Pyramid.

"What are you doing, Carola?" Jarlath called after her. "Come back!" But she was scarcely aware of anything but the need to get away. The looks of surprise on Matthias' and Belinda's faces would have been comical in less serious circumstances. Not that anyone was looking at them, for all eyes were fixed on Carola.

1. Before anyone could stop her, she had left the road and disappeared into the woods that bordered it.
2. The Ancients attempted to stop her.
3. But fate was against her. She had not gone very far, when she tripped over an obstacle that she had not seen in the half-light of dawn, and crashed to the ground.
