Nendi Learns Some Background

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 73045

Nendi thought that it would appear rather rude to get up and walk out, even if the exciting part of the performance had not yet begun. Indeed even her whispered conversation with the other woman was attracting a few disapproving looks from other members of the audience. So she said: "Thank you very much, but I'm fine as I am." Then she turned her attention back to the stage.

Then another woman whispered to her: "As an out of towner, this must seem strange to you. Would you like to borrow my programme?"

Nendi gratefully accepted. Apparently Valinda and Pomona were re-enacting a famous duel from hundreds of years before. To discourage frivolous challenges, the laws on duelling in those days had laid down that the challenger must be at a disadvantage, by being allowed to wear only the minimum clothing that decency required.

  1. Apparently this annual re-enactment, though it used professional performers, had great religious significance. Hence the use of the temple.
  2. The re-enactment was staged annually to remind everyone of how their country had been shaped by what had been decided by the result of the duel.
