A Ride with Satan's Little Helpers

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 72667

The present day Scott had been sitting silently for what seemed like forever, replaying the traumatic incidents stemming back from the Baldwin/Montcalm basketball riot towards the end of 1994, or at least what he could remember. He cringed in embarrassment as he recalled some of his erratic behavior, and the isolated times in his bedroom, flipping through school yearbooks. Why, of all people, did he select his old friend Raymond Chen to steal his name for an alter ego from?

"Almost finished, Scott?" asks the older Scott.
"Oh! Not yet, there's still something I need to think over," replies Scott the younger.

Scott thought over ten years of casual sex with different women in different cities every single night. He would never truly understand what prompted him to become such a lothario, but at least he finally faced the events that led him down that path. Sure, it might seem ridiculous to blame what could be considered immoral and questionable behavior involving women on a riot breaking out during a high school basketball game, but at least Scott finally felt peaceful about the whole thing.

Then, Krissy entered his thoughts. Wow, she was so wonderful, Scott thought. She was the first one to truly tame the wild man. Ever since their first night together [42529], Scott knew that Krissy truly was the one; the one to finally get Scott away from ten years of meaningless sex with strange women. Sure, she cheated on her boyfriend at the time, but things were different now. Roger was out of the picture, and both Scott and Krissy had promised to one another that they would definitely pursue a committed relationship. Scott initially had reservations, since he is seven years older than Krissy, but he decides not to let an age difference ruin what could be the greatest thing to ever happen to him.

"You know, you're right," the younger Scott finally says. "All I needed to do was face my fears. I was always afraid of thinking about the fight at the game, mostly because of..."
"Because you isolated yourself away from it to the extent that you did." Scott the elder finishes. "That's totally understandable. But sooner or later, you would've had to confront it, if only to move on with life."
"Yeah, totally."
"How does it feel, Scott?"
"I-I really can't tell right now. While I do feel better at confronting my past like you asked me to do, it's still too early to tell. But I still have a lot of questions, like how those two schools dealt with the riot, and whatever happened to my teammates and the guys we played against. Man! It kind of sucks that I kept ignoring the situation, and I really wish I hadn't."

Scott now notices that his older counterpart is holding a leather-bound book in his hand. "This book has all of your answers. Someone close to you compiled a scrapbook of everything that happened since the game in 1994. I must warn you, though..."
"There's always a catch, isn't there?"
"Again, we're risking damaging the timelines, Scott," answers Scott the elder. "But there are pages in the book that you must not read, no matter what. If you go through the first half of the book, you will be fine, since those events are in the past. But, I must implore you to go no further than the halfway point of the book, no matter how tempting it is. You can't risk it, Scott."
"Can't I have even one hint from the future?"
"I'd love to, but it's dangerous. All I will say is, you will find true happiness at last. Please, take the book."

The present day Scott accepts the book. "Wow, I really don't know what to say!"
"Say nothing about it, Scott. Just remember to not read past the midway point. Now, if you'll excuse me, I should be going. I've probably spent too much time in this time period already."
"Wait! Will I ever see you again?"
"I really shouldn't be saying this, but there will be five points in life between now and when I came back to greet you that you will need my assistance. You'll know it when you get there, of course, and don't be afraid to call on me."
"Wow...thanks. I really don't know what to say."
"Say nothing about it, Scott. Just smile and say goodbye to me. We will meet again someday."

The elder Scott walks towards some kind of interdimensional gateway that has opened up in the middle of the clearing they had been standing in. It's just big enough to accomodate Scott. "Oh Krissy! Kids! I'm home!" the older Scott says just before he disappears.

Scott stands in the middle of the clearing, carefully holding the scrapbook in his hands. He had briefly been tempted to run into the gateway after his older counterpart, but who knew what danger he would've been in had he jumped twenty years ahead in the future.

Now what?

  1. Scott returns to the scene of his funeral.
  2. Scott starts reading through his scrapbook.
  3. Scott continues his walk to nowhere.
