Carola turned, and was startled to see that coming towards her was what
appeared to be a duplicate of herself. Was it some sort of shapeshifter?
Why had it been tracking them, and why had it made its presence known
now, when it would have to deal with the Ancients? Was it so very
confident? Maybe it was afraid that the Ancients would take the four of
them away to where it could not follow? Or had she misjudged its
intentions, and it was here to protect them? Why had it taken her form,
though? Whether it was friend or foe, she could see no reason for that.
Unless it meant to kill her and to take her place. But if that was the
case, then it could not afford to leave any witnesses.
Jarlath moved to interpose himself between Carola and her doppelganger. When it was about twenty paces away, the creature stopped. "I was sent to kill only the girl," it said in a hissing parody of Carola's own voice. "If you do not interfere, I will not harm you." "Sent by whom?" Jarlath asked. It did not answer his question, instead saying: "Stand aside." Jarlath remained where he was, screening Carola from her duplicate. The creature produced a device from its pocket and pointed it at Jarlath.
