Astra gave the Doctor a suspicious look. Was he betraying her to this
woman, who apparently was an old acquaintance of his? It was true that he
and this Rani did not seem to see exactly eye to eye, but he had not
turned her scheme down flat. Whatever that scheme was, since Astra had
been able to make little sense of what the Rani had said. Was the woman
really going to give her a second heart? Where would the Rani obtain it?
From the chest of some unfortunate victim? And would having two hearts
really turn her into a Time Lord?
But she was tired, and even had she not been so weary her pragmatic side recognised that she would have had little hope of defeating as many as four of the mechanical men, especially since she herself was still naked and weaponless. (Were the creatures more of what the Doctor had called Zereons? They were not the convincing imitations of human beings that the one impersonating Fred had been.) Just before the robots escorted her out of the room she realised that, apparently unnoticed by the Rani, Velus was nowhere to be seen. Had he slipped away while the attention of the Rani and the Doctor was focused on one another, perhaps when they had been walking along the long corridor with the strange blinking lights? The robots took her along a short, well-lit corridor and into a large, well-furnished bedroom with many features that were unfamiliar to Astra, including an en suite bathroom. But she felt too tired to investigate right now. She lay down on the inviting bed, and was asleep almost before her head touched the pillow. The last thing she remembered was the sound of the door of her room being locked from the outside by the last of the retreating robots.
