The librarian, a sentient man in a simian's body, ooked in frustration.
Normally, uninvited hugs usually got the hugger uninvited bruises, but he
was on a magical mission for Commander Vimes and magic meant
caution. Magic meant balance. You dusted the books whether they needed it
or not. You spent half an hour cleaning gum out of crack in the floor
nobody would ever step on and nobody ever would. And apparently now, you
tolerated hugs from a half-naked squishy human who thought you were the
cutest ever. But even if the hugs were from a properly pretty simian, he still had work to do. Someone had stolen the ledgers from the City Watch and with the blackmail material in, they stood to lose half their forces. The City Watch were good men but when one had proof of 'testing the merchandise' or 'checking doorknobs' or 'outright stealing', it could be a huge blow. And of course, the Patrician had asked the Librarian to be on the lookout for the books, if he would be so kind. When it came to the Patrician, 'if you would be so kind' always meant 'I want it done now or else'. The half-naked squishy human finally stopped hugging. The Librarian brought the last of the drawings of the books that had made it through the dimensional travel (Rows @3---9 had demanded a paper sacrifice) and showed it to her.
