There was no cover to be had in the tunnel that they were in. The bats
flew down the tunnel toards them, attacked, then came at them again from
the opposite direction. They had a wingspan of almost four feet. Fred did
his best to fend them off with his sword, but there were too many of
them. He himself was well-protected by his armour, but the girl was more
vulnerable. Soon she had a cut on one cheek from one of the creatures'
claws, and her dress was ripped in four or five places, through some of
which blood was starting to seep.
For a moment the bats withdrew, but it seemed that they were preparing to attack again. "Get down under me," Fred told Diana. "I'll protect you with my body." But the girl shook her head. "Mmph, umph," she said. He quickly removed her gag. "What is it?" he asked. "We don't have much time before they attack again." "I didn't want to reveal this, as it would only have made you more suspicious of me, but I am a sorceress. Untie my hands and I'll make short work of these bats." Though he did not trust her, their position was so desperate that he felt that he had little chouce but to do as she asked. As soon as he had done so, she extended her right arm and said a word that Fred had never heard before. A bolt of blue fire shot out of her hand and flew in the direction in which she was pointing. Its path intersected two of the giant bats, which fell down dead. Apparently they had been fried. She fired two more bolts, killing three more bats. The remainder then fled. "With power like that at your disposal, you didn't have to submit to having your hands tied," Fred said. "One of those bolts would have finished me. Who are you, and why did you tell me such a ridiculous story? You could surely have made up something better."
