Though Zular no doubt deserved death, Astra could not bring herself to
despatch him when he was for the moment unable to defend himself. If she
took him prisoner, then she would have to watch him all the time, which
would be a nuisance. But if she just left him, then he would be free to
carry out his threat to warn the dragon that Fred had come to kill him.
Before she could make up her mind, however, a dark vapour materialised around Zular, and then he abruptly vanished. Astra cursed. Zular must have powerful dark magic at his call, magic that could be used only by those who had pledged their sould to evil. No doubt he would have gone straight to the dragon, who would now be aware that Fred was after him and that she herself had escaped, if he had not known already. She decided to return to the point where she, Fred and Velus had separated. [44] If Fred was not waiting for her there, thrn she would take the passage that supposedly led to the library. On reflection, she thought that the three of them splitting up had not been such a good idea. Oh well, at least she now had Zular's sword.
