"We'll take the 'middle' path," Astra decided. "Not that it's the middle path any more. But it was, and therefore in theory it ought to take us more nearly in the direction that we wish to take than the other one would."

So they headed down the path that Astra had chosen. It continued straight ahead for a long time, with no side passages. After about fifteen minutes Astra sighed. "This is stupid. We could be down here for hours, and my arms are already getting tired from holding my hands in the same place. I'm sure that I can rely on you to be a gentleman, Fred, so I'm going to lower them. And I promise not to be shocked if you lower your own hand."
