The Hunter Exams

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 69819

The three proctors for this part of the exam discuss things in a far corner of the caverns. Each of the surviving applicants, 339 in all, were allowed to cross the multi-leveled bridge in their own way. But naked?
Sure, part of the test was to see how the applicants handled -waiting- for their turn (even the first to go had to wait an hour) but nobody had ever simply stripped naked and burned their clothes.
Up to this time, the proctors though Josh had an actual chance to make it to a Hunter, one of the rare talented few to operate throughout society, performing mighty deeds.
Anyway, it's was Josh's turn. He approaches the bridge. It creaked, the winds from the near-bottomless chasm it crossed were heavy today. The artifical lights made him sweat. It didn't help the chasm and the bridge traps had claimed two applicants out of the previous thirty.
The twenty eight on the far side, watched by another Hunter-proctor (Josh had heard this Hunter specialized in psychological attacks) hooted and hollered.

  1. Josh attacks the bridge.
  2. Josh quits, which is perfectly allowed by the rules. He is given a pass to come back next year.
  3. Before Josh can take a step, the bridge vanishes. Was this a trick? Stage 2 -had- been a marathon that seemed to defy gravity.
  4. Josh falls into the chasm without even touching the bridge.
  5. Josh gets entrapped in the first fatal trap but in typical Josh fashion, he actually doesn't die or is injured in any way.
  6. Josh spots a second bridge about fifty feet down. Why didn't anyone use this? The goal was simply to get to the other side.
  7. One of the fallen could be seen thirty feet down! He might be alive, these applicants were DAMNED tough.
